Unit 3 Foundation
This page will display my work throughout my time studying A2. The first task we are set is to take photographs of a certain genre or subject around the school. These are some ideas of mine and my work.
Physical Education - SPORT
The subject area i have taken an interest in is sports or P.E. I decided to take photographs within the school of students in competitions and intense games that i thought were relevant to P.E. and then further edited them on photoshop. I chose to highlight certain elements within the photographs such as by keeping them in colour and the rest of the photograph, black and white.
Summer holiday task
During the summer I visited two exhibitions that influenced me particularly in fashion photography. One of the exhibitions i visited was called 'Glamour of the Gods - Hollywood Portraits', from which i chose two artists i wished to compare. Glamour of the Gods is an exhibition which celebrates Hollywood portraiture from the industries 'Golden Age' (the period between 1920 and 1960) From Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin to Audrey Hepburn and James Dean, this collection of famous portraits helped transform actors and actresses into international fame and style icons. I was particularly interested in the work of Clarence Sinclair Bull and that of Floyd Mccarty who are both famous early and mid 20th century photographers who both specialized in capturing particularly rare images and unique shots as well as having classy photography skills and yet very individual styles. These two photographers helped to illustrate the actors and actresses of Hollywood and their enduring appeal to the world.
James Dean, Rebel Without a Cause, 1955. Photograph by Floyd McCarty
This particular image drew my attention due to the character and imagination within the photograph. I think this picture is incredibly clever, James Dean was a famous Hollywood heart throb as well as a fashion icon yet this picture has been taken to almost look distorted and out of place, as if his arms and head are bigger than his body? Although it does still remain stylish and 'cool'. Another element that attracts the observer is the object in the characters right hand. It has cleverly been taken out of focus by Floyd McCarty who is able to draw the viewer in by questioning what it is. Furthermore this leads to more questions as it means the photograph may not simply be a studio shot and the character might in fact be doing something within it, leading to more questions such as where is he, what is he doing and what is he looking at?
